Gunn elaborated […] while talking with Variety.
“I’m excited for people to get to see the essence of what we’re doing, because it really has been like this private secret that we’ve all been hoarding,” he said. “We felt really good about it, like from a moral place, even from the beginning. We all felt like we were doing something good, both in terms of quality and in terms of actually something that’s not a fascistic power fantasy.”
DC movies are just so cursed. Not always by DC’s/WB’s own fault, but always cursed. I hate to already be expecting the new Superman to be a massive dumpster fire, but who knows what we should expect.
After what happened with Henry Cavill they cursed themselves on this one.
I agree. I have zero faith in the studio that brought us the previous winners such as,
- WW1984
- Aquaman
- Green Lantern
- Justice League (any variant)
I 100% percent blame WB executives for meddling with director choices. Check it out: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ExecutiveMeddling/DCExtendedUniverse
It has been well over a decade since a movie starring Superman came on the big screens.*
I am going to remain optimistic, and wait for the proper trailer to form full opinions, but I do agree that the teaser could have shown more of that optimism that James Gunn is talking about in his interviews.
*There have been movies which featured the character but always detrimentally sidelined him for a shinier toy (Batman, JL, etc.)
I feel like this looks to have potential, and if you’ve seen what he did in suicide squad, you know that he can do dark where it needs to be but guardians shows us his display of hope and humor. I agree though that unless it’s a non batfleck batman movie or joker, they’ve been kinda trash since Nolan left.
This looks… rough tbh. I honestly thought this was a CW TV series at first.
I will give it the benefit of the doubt. I just watched the trailers for GotG 1 and GotG 3, to compare them with this one and it is certainly less entertaining, but I still have hope, with reservations.
I feel like this has promise.
I love that it leans into comic-book-iness instead of trying to make Superman grimdark. The colors are bright. It unapologetically includes Krypto. There’s a kaiju. This is what comics do. It also pays homage to the original movies with the John Williams score, but with a twist on the electric guitar so it’s also unique.
I also actually like that it’s not going to be an origin story and that other heroes already exist and are acknowledged. I don’t think the other heroes are going to play a major role, but the fact that they’re there at all is another sort of thing that the comics do. New readers just have to accept that these characters exist and don’t require a lengthy intro. I think movie audiences will be able to do the same.
Most importantly it shows that Gunn seems to understand the character. Supes isn’t dark and brooding. He’s bright and cheesy but a source of hope. Clark looks like a dork, as he should. He has chemistry with Lois.
Yes the effects are a bit rough. It’s a teaser. They will probably improve by release.
But if James Gunn can make the Guardians of the Galaxy, a team that only the most hardcore comic book fans even knew about, into a household name, I’m excited to see what he can do with Superman and the DC Universe.
I think everyone is getting sick of constantly seeing origin stories of the same three super heroes.
gardner green lantern - that shows promise.
