As the title suggests I am stuck understanding what’s going on here and I’m pretty pissed off right now.
So I had a Minecraft world (Java) running on windows 11 and a few weeks ago I was playing for a few hours and when I came to save the game it just kept spinning and I noticed the clock on the desktop had stopped about 90 mins before and thus it corrupted my game save and I lost the world.
I was finding the motivation to play (work all day on a pc so sometimes it’s hard) as it is, and so I was reluctant to start a new world. A couple of weeks later I started a new world and put in an hour here and there. Today I’m playing again for a few hours and come to save again and low and behold the same thing happened. Now I’m too frustrated to check if this world is also dead (last time the folder was there but it never showed in game).
Any ideas what is going on here or where I can begin to investigate once I get the motivation to turn the pc on again.
The pc is a few months old. Built myself and the specs if needed are:
- Asus PRIME B550-PLUS Mobo
- 32 GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
- Ryzen 7 5600x
- Gigabyte GeForce rtx 4060 GPU
- Nvme storage
- AIO water cooler.
As an aside temps are higher than I want. Like 60+ on load (pc) and game launch, but does settle around 45 once Minecraft is loaded in.
That is a peculiar problem I have not seen or heard f before. It doesn’t sound like it is completely freezing if it keeps letting you play the game. Just windows behind the game is freezing?
Do you play in fullscreen mode where it takes complete control over the graphics output of your monitor? I wonder if there is some driver bug that is not properly relinquishing control of the monitor to your OS when you minimize the game. If possible I’d try playing in either windowed fullscreen mode or just windowed mode next time as a test.
Also it is always worth updating your graphics drivers too.
I agree it’s quite perplexing.
So yes you’re correct in that I can still play the game, like 90 mins after windows seemingly crashed. Once I decide I’m not playing any longer and come to save is when I realise that the whole of windows (aside from the game) has crashed as I can’t load the task manager or even shut down and have to just power off.
So I have duel monitor setup and I play fullscreen on one of them, but that screen still shows the start start menu (taskbar) whatever it’s called.
I will try those tips you suggested, once I’m less pissed off about the whole ordeal (which I get is silly as it’s just a game, but that game offers me a release from the stress of life and so I don’t appreciate the stress it’s causing).
I’ll update once I’ve tested. Obviously on a throwaway world.
If you can’t even load task manager something seriously crashed and it’s odd that you’re still able to play the game during that time. If you test again try hitting caps lock on your keyboard during the freeze and see if the caps lock light on your keyboard turns on.
I will try again, but I will say it’s quite difficult to want to play again knowing you might lose whatever you’re doing. So I’ve been on but kept saving every few minutes and I’m not sure if I should just do as I did and leave it until it crashes.
I’ve also been going back and forth between windows more than I would as I’m nervous about it 😞
Agreed, if the game is still playable on other machines it’s a graphics problem.
In any case, it’s java so the server should autosave and you can add mods for backups.
Thanks for pointing out mods for auto save backups as I’ll have a look at those.
Try loosening tertiary timings on the vengeance ram. XMP tends to be unstable with some of their kits on ryzen 5000.
I second this. Their ram is very finicky. I once spent months dealing with a random windows crash on one particular game (would not crash that often. Sometimes would run for a couple hours issue free.) I suspected ram pretty early on, but could never get hours and hours worth of ram stress testing to ever show an error. After also ruling out pretty much anything else under the sun I said screw it and ran the ram a bit slower and looser than spec. Issue went away.
Use a third party launcher like ATLauncher to be able to see the logs of what is going on. To me it sounds like there is too much going on. My game does a similar thing when I regenerate more than 5 chunks with worldedit. It seems like the game is playing normally but it is quietly getting slower and slower until it crashes and disappears all of you progress.
Try adjusting your allocated RAM to 8+ GB and get a 3rd part launcher so you can see what it is that bugs the game out.
I’m not sure what game compatibility with Linux is but… I just rather download a game and play it instead of fucking around with CLI commands to get WINE or whatever garbage has to be run in order to play video games. But that’s just me. I know better than to ignore someone’s entire question just to suggest what I want.
I don’t actually think it’s the game that crashed though, more windows crashed and that prevents me saving, but when I try to save it corrupts the file.
I will have a look into the third party launchers though to cover all bases.
I am with you on I just want to install and play. I’m a nerd but I don’t have time to be a Linux nerd as well as an MC nerd too.
I’m glad you’re considerate enough to not just post a comment about hurr durr don’t use windows (as it really does help with this situation).
Well it absolutely lagged my pc in realtime and made anything inaccessible, even opening task manager was not an option. Cause your PC is hella beefy, it’s really odd that it’s doing that on Vanilla.
With steam and proton, setup on Linux is rather simple and it works as well as windows for most of the time. And I hardly know anything about Linux, except I get 25 to 40% more performance in almost every game
Also if you are playing FTB… for some absolutely insane reason they added a crouch to quick farm option that is basically cheating bonemeal. This mod crashes the game whenever you crouch near any farmable objects.
This is not a technical support community
If you could point me to the posting rules, I would be grateful so I can better find the best community next time.
I assumed AskLemmy implied you could ask anything, evidently I am wrong but I’m happy to learn how to understand the posting rules for each community.
I cannot point you to the rules, because every lemmy client is different. But if you are on the website with a desktop browser, it’s in the sidebar. I wrote a quick guide about this topic a short while ago: https://nx2.site/guide-to-the-ask-communities
Ah, so I found the rules for this sub and I don’t see one that would have prevented me from asking my question.
The rules said no support for lemmy questions, which mine wasn’t.
I guess you could argue rule 5 if you’re being pedantic, the rule about creates discussion. Which I would argue my question did.
Thanks for pointing me in the correct place.
Your problem is those four blue squares at the left of your toolbar. Find a way to get rid of those and your PC should run a lot better :)
Yes yes Linux is better I know this, you know this, we all know this.
But… I’m a software developer that is dealing with nerdy stuff all day long. At the end of those days I just want a simple life and not have to be a nerd.
That said if this continues to happen, I guess I’ll have to go back to Linux but it’s been a minute and I’m just not ready for that rabbit hole as inevitably it will stoke the nerdiness and I’ll have to set it up the way I want otherwise what’s the point haha
