I think SD card failure rates are way overblown if you’re buying from reputable manufacturers (Sandisk, Samsung). I’m sure they do occasionally fail, but I’ve never experienced one.

You’re right, for really intensive tasks the costs can climb, but I see people asking for ideas for what to do with a junk laptop and the top suggestion is always something like pi-hole or a bookmark manager that could run on a potato.

Proton offers a “bridge” service that does local decryption for email clients like TB but it’s an extra step and has to be running 24/7.

Laptop performance when closed is quite variable, but depending on where you live, each 10W of idle consumption 24/7/365 could cost you somewhere around $20/yr (assumes @$0.20/kWh, YMMV). This isn’t overwhelming on it’s own, but it is “cost difference between a junked laptop and a Raspberry Pi” kinda money.

IDK a practical use for a 7-pi cluster, but I will note, for tasks that can be performed within the pi’s performance envelope, it’s an incredibly power-efficient system. So while in many cases a few raspberry pi may lose on upfront cost, their performance/dollar tends to even out when you start factoring in energy costs.

There’s diminishing returns as you start to get towards the upper end of performance though, and IDK how 7 pis at full load compare in W/flop vs a SFF PC. 28 cores @2.4 GHz, 35 W for the pi, vs a new CPU running 8 cores, @4.7 GHz, 120W may be a close race.

There’s more nuance than just cores & frequency when it comes to performance in a given task, but the pi is remarkably lean.

I apologize to the articles authors for my cynicism, it is clear from the article that nothing bad could possibly come from allowing this new plastic to dissolve in our oceans. Love the list, just a quick callout, these are pretty resource light services for self hosting, even $5/month seems like a stretch.

If you’re already running a server, the added overhead for a bookmark manager has got to be fractional watts, especially of you’re not bookmarking constantly.

If you’re doing a standalone server just for this, these can more than likely be hosted on a Raspberry Pi which uses 5W under load (maybe $1/mo under heavy load), and are incredibly lean when idle (pennies/month).

I do think your post does a good job making people think about the hidden costs of self hosting, but done right self hosting energy can be greatly reduced

Yes and no, I’ve treated the symptoms, but not the problem. All it takes is a trillion dollar company buying a new domain every once in a while to foil uBlock, and now that it’s more known, anyone can create an an app that opens ports and listens for trackers.

Would love it if Firefox would let me block all requests to localhost.
