  • The Eternals - Could have been amazing if they weren’t trying to tell like six origin stories AND THEN a team-up story in the same film

    Honorably mentions:

The Marvels - The first act was some of the best post-Endgame stuff in the MCU, the bickering between the three leads really reminded me of how the Avengers fought in the first Avengers film. It really was a shame that they just said “sorry” in a cornfield and released all the tension right at the end of the first act.

The Substance - Had the potential to be a timeless classic but it forgoed poignancy for 40 extra minutes of absurdist, overindulgent and redundant body horror

The New Mutants - They should have never hired the director of The Fault In Our Stars for a movie like that

LEGO: The Adventures Of Clutch Powers - Too much setup without payoff

We’re All Going to the World’s Fair - HORRIBLE pacing really hurts this movie even though the story, atmosphere and worldbuilding were incredible

  • I liked it. It was a lil clunky, but not so clunky that you’d know that it went through development hell if nobody told you. Some of the dialogue was flat and busy telling the audience what it already showed us, but most of it was competent if not good. I think the humor in this movie wasn’t crazy but it was wayyyyyy better than the standard brand of “Marvel humor” we usually see. The “since when were they red?” line is basically the only moment we get of humor like that, it was quite refreshing. And no, Torres wasn’t annoying in this movie, at least not to me, he was fine (although I don’t like how the writers positioned him for most of the third act). The action was great for the most part even if at times it feels like Cap has Domino’s superpower.

If this movie has a major flaw, it’d be that it borrows many themes and plot points from TWS and CW. But I liked those beats and they were competently handled, so the movie works for me.

I’m astounded by how poorly this movie is being received. Especially considering the rumors surrounding the reshoots and test screenings, it felt to me like it exceeded the expectations those rumors set in my mind by leaps and bounds.

  • Only Cap 4. I personally am mostly excited for Thunderbolts* but I have friends who have been talking about Cap 4 for at least a month or two now, and they’re extremely casual MCU fans. I feel like the break in superhero movies has really ignited an unexpected appetite for superhero films again amongst moviegoers. Even I am looking forward to Cap 4 now, even with all of the rumors that it’s going to be bad and all the rumors and stuff.
